Drilling Pumpkins

As I mentioned yesterday, Doug and I went to the pumpkin patch as part of his birthday celebration. This may have been a little more for me than for him, seeing as I get ridiculously giddy at the thought of doing any fall activity. We picked out a big, beautiful pumpkin and rushed home to get started.

I wanted to do something different than the standard carving I've always done, and I absolutely love how it turned out. This year, we drilled our pumpkin!

First, we gutted the pumpkin.

We had helpers close by for moral support.

I drew a sketch of what I wanted to drill. The first dots I made were the darker ones at the top and bottom, so I could make sure the drawing was straight.

I found this picture online to go off of.

Then I grabbed a Sharpie and drew the picture on the pumpkin (in dots).

Then started drilling! I used a 7/32" bit for the outline and 1/8" bit for the eyes and mouth.

One tip I realized during this was to drill from where most people will be looking at the pumpkin...let me rephrase that so it might make sense: our pumpkin will be on the ground, so most people will be looking at it from a high angle, so I drilled each hole so that the most light will shine upwards. Let me know if that still doesn't make sense.

I LOVE how it looks, but it is so dang difficult to get a good picture of! This is the best I could do. It looks a lot brighter in person.

I plan on doing another pumpkin this weekend that says BOO. We'll see how that turns out!

**Update: I decided to do a polka dot pumpkin instead! I used 3 different sized drill bits and I love how it turned out!

And now for my fake pumpkins. I think the front porch is finally finished! I found the wreaths at Homegoods, and the pumpkins are from Target, Homegoods, and Michaels.

I spray painted the one on the left with gold glitter paint.

And used the same paint on the polka dot one, then used Martha's glitter paint for the dots.

Have y'all tried any new ideas on pumpkins this year?
