The Hills: Is It All a LIE!?

My mom and I have been watching all of the seasons of The Hills (and Laguna Beach) on Instant Netflix. We had never seen an episode of Laguna and only a few of The Hills here or there.

It has been SO fun to watch them all in order, and I now have a slight obsession with LC. But, after googling a few things, we found out that IT'S NOT REAL! You're probably laughing right now that I didn't know this sooner, but we are very disappointed!

So how much is real and how much is scripted? Did they really date any of these guys or is it all for the show!? I saw that Heidi didn't really work at Bolthouse (I had a hard time believing this anyway) but did Lauren and Whitney really work at Teen Vogue and People's Revolution?

Any info y'all can provide would be much appreciated :)

  1. Ha! It's funny you posted this today because I just finished the last book in LC's LA Candy series (don't judge!) and the series is all about the inner workings of being on a reality show and how it's not, in fact, real. I was bummed when I learned it wasn't real (they do something at the end of the finale to show you) but I kind of had a feeling a long. It's still a fun guilty pleasure though :)

  2. It is a bummer that it's not real, but the "acting" is amusing... And I'm pretty sure Lauren and Heidi actually do not like each other...

It was always good to watch for the clothes

  3. You have to read Lauren's book series LA Candy! She says it is only loosely based on the show but I think it's pretty close to what actually happened! They are easy reads too!

  4. ummm, I didn't really know this either. I mean, I didn't think it was ALL real, but I guess I wanted to believe that most of it was. ugh. stupid actors.

  5. Haha this is my favorite post ever. I love The Hills. Really anything Lauren Conrad. There was definitely a lot of acting but a lot was still true! Lauren and Whitney both worked at their fashion jobs. They met each other at Teen Vogue. They are both working in fashion now and are quite successful if I do say so myself.

Annnnnd now that I've proved how obsessed I am with LC...I'm done. Hope that helped!

  6. Next time we get together we will have to talk about this:) We have good family friends who live in Laugna and their kids were asked to be on the show. They declined. From what I do know production puts together situations and tell the cast to react. Pretty typical for most reality shows. I work with one of the girls from LC's Laugna season, who is a doll! I am working up the courage to ask her about it. I am glad you and your mom have been entertained:)

  8. I loved the Hills. Lauren is amazing and I have several of her dresses from Kohls and read all her beauty tips. Haha. I knew some of it was fake, but didn't know most of it or all of it was. I don't get it. Fill me in if you figure it out!

  10. Hahaha I have a GREAT story for you! After seeing one episode of The Hills, I vowed never to watch it. However, in college, I overheard one of my VERY best guy friends say that he didn't want to miss The Hills that night. I was in shock and instantly started making fun of him. Then, he informed me that he knows Heidi and went to high school with her (in a tiny little Colorado town called Crested Butte)! He said that when he watched her wedding on TV, he knew almost everyone that was there!
